Organic Cotton

What is organic cotton?

Organic cotton is cotton that is produced and certified according to organic farming standards. Unlike conventional cotton, its production preserves the health of soils, ecosystems and people by using natural rather than artificial production processes. The most important thing to note is that growers of organic cotton are not allowed to use toxic chemicals or GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). Instead, their agriculture combines tradition, innovation and science to create a protected environment and to promote a better quality of life for all involved. All our products are made with organic fabric and certified.

What are the benefits?

Reducing our Impact on the Environment

Organic cotton’s production does not use any toxic substances. It does not damage the soil, has less impact on the air, uses 88% less water and 62% less energy than conventionally produced cotton. Conventional cotton is responsible for the use of about 16% of insecticides and 7% of pesticides in the world.

Preserving the Health of Living Beings

Growing organic cotton protects producers and their families. They are not exposed to chemicals on their land or through the food and water they consume. Often, during the stage of dyeing conventional cotton, some heavy metals named “chromium” are used, and these have components susceptible to cause allergies. What’s more, they can be found leaking carcinogenic substances.

Limiting Water Waste

By 2025, two-thirds of the world's population is likely to face a scarcity of freshwater. 80% of organic cotton cultivation is rainfed – not irrigated – which reduces the pressure on local water sources. The absence of chemicals also means that the water is cleaner and safer for your health. Cotton is often grown in areas with water scarcity, which uses irrigation. As an example: it takes 2700 litres of water to make a conventional cotton t-shirt compared to around 250 litres for an organic t-shirt.

Limiting CO2 Emissions

What is CO2? Living things convert oxygen into CO2, while plants convert CO2 into oxygen. When the concentration of CO2 in the air becomes too high, breathing becomes difficult, resulting in headaches, reduced hearing, quickened pulse and increased blood pressure. To avoid these health consequences, soils must be restored and preserved so that their natural function as a carbon store is re-established and improved. We must set up agricultural techniques aimed at preserving the natural wealth of the soil, and no longer deplete them such as agroecology. Textile industry is currently the second most polluting industry in the world, just after oil.

What is the difference between organic and conventional cotton?

Organic cotton is an environmentally friendly and sustainable fabric that has been produced and certified according to organic farming standards. Unlike conventional cotton, its production does not rely on the use of toxic products, chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, which makes it much more respectful of people and the planet. It also contributes to water conservation and the promotion of healthy soil and air quality. In addition, organic cotton is produced without genetically modified organisms (GMOs), which preserves the genetic integrity of the crop.

Organic cotton also has many benefits for consumers, with a softer, more durable fabric that does not irritate the skin. It is also hypoallergenic, breathable and stays vibrant longer than conventional cotton fabrics.

In what part of the world is cotton grown?

Organic cotton can be grown in many countries around the world, including India, China, Brazil, Pakistan, Turkey, Australia and the United States. In some parts of Africa and South America, organic cotton is also grown. Each region has its own climatic conditions that influence the type of crop and its success. Soil quality, climate, temperature and humidity all play a role in the growth of the crop. In addition to these factors, organic farming practices must also be followed for a cotton farm to produce certified organic cotton. These include using natural fertilizers and avoiding synthetic chemicals or GMOs.

How do I know if my t-shirt or garment is made of organic cotton?

When looking for organic cotton products, look for items labeled as certified organic. This certification means that the items have been produced and processed according to specific standards set by international organizations such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or OCS (Organic Content Standard).
